Graduate employment issues in Scotland
Degrees of Insecurity is based on a CAS survey of nearly 1000 recent Scottish graduates, and reveals that unemployment, low income jobs and skills displacement are issues for many of them. The report looks at background issues affecting employability and makes several recommendations on how better to support students and graduates with the transition into work.
Key findings in the survey are:
- 56% of respondents said they had been unemployed for a period after graduating, of which 20% have been unemployed for more than a year.
- 25% said they were currently underemployed in low-paid or short-term positions that did not require a degree
- Of those who were under-employed, only 15% said they were confident of finding a graduate level job in the future
This report shows the employment issues many graduates are facing, looks at both the problems and good practice within the current support systems for helping students and graduates find work, and recommends how CAS thinks issues could be addressed.
