Being Young Being Heard: young people and benefits

Part of our series of briefing sheets based on the report Being Young Being Heard, this sheet focuses on the problems young people face with benefits.

CAS' report, Being Young Being Heard, outlines the impact of the recession on young people in Scotland in their own words. The report shows that the effect of the recession has been that too many young people have become trapped in unemployment; in low paying unsatisfying jobs; in expensive private lets; on benefits that keep them afloat but don’t give them a leg up; and ultimately in a place where their potential is going to waste.

Young people are entitled to lower benefit payments and less support than older adults, whilst their entitlement is often complex and difficult to understand.
